Commercial discussions between Transnet and Electromotive Diesel (EMD) of the US - the preferred bidder to supply the utility with 212 diesel locomotives for use mainly by its general freight business (GFB) - should be concluded within weeks, CEO Maria Ramos told Engineering News on Tuesday. The acquisition would form a significant part of a R35-billion, five-year recapitalisation of Transnet Freight Rail (formerly Spoornet), itself the largest consumer of the group's R80-billion investment budget for rail, ports, and pipelines. The second-biggest recipient of capital would be Transnet National Ports Authority at R18,5-billion, followed by Transnet Pipelines (R11,2-billion), Transnet Port Terminals (R9,6-billion), and Transnet Rail Engineering (R4-billion). |
