Pietermaritzburg - Three men escaped unharmed when the helicopter they were in hit a power line and crashed into a dam in the Eston area on Sunday morning.
The men were filming the Hill 2 Hill cycle race.
The pilot, Grant Surtees, 34, Alex Percival, 28 and cameraman Boris von Schoenebeck, 40, all managed to get themselves out of the helicopter and swim to safety.
"We were filming the race with the cameraman in the back. We avoided the visible powerlines across the dam, but as we flew across the dam there were more lower-voltage lines that were not very visible.
"As I saw the lines, I tried to avoid them, but it was too late and I hit them," said Surtees.
Percival said it was a new experience for him.
"I've been in a helicopter before, but not regularly.
"I was surprised to be as calm as I was despite spiralling to the water and hitting it with a hard bump.
"Getting out was also easy, but trying to swim to shore with a heavy camera was tough," he said.
Von Schoenebeck said that he was calm while everything was happening. "I panicked a little as I could not get my seatbelt off.
"But I was more worried about my camera equipment and camera.
"Getting to the shore was tough going as I had warm, heavy clothing on and the camera had a weight on it.
"The equipment damaged is very valuable and I am not sure how I am going to replace it."
