<b>GLASGOW</b> Survival hopes for the world’s rarest parrot have been boosted in its native New Zealand by the development of a dietary supplement. Pellets mimicking the nutritional content of the natural diet of the flightless kakapo boosted clutch sizes significantly, the journal Biological Conservation reported. Kakapos were moved from their natural habitat to islands where they were safe from predators, but there they lacked the diet for producing large clutches of eggs. Professor David Houston, of the University of Glasgow, led the team that developed the pellets.

A new analysis of data from a large national study found that people who took a 200 microgram selenium supplement each day for almost eight years had an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who took a placebo or dummy pill.The data came from the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial (NPC), a large randomized, multi-center, clinical trial from the eastern United States, designed to evaluate whether selenium supplements prevent skin cancer.
